This is an adorable silk Victorian tam c.1894. There was a calling card included with the hat for the original owner, Elsie B. Bumgarner. I was able to find her - Elsie Bidwell Bumgarner, and she was born in 1890. I am confident she is the correct person because of where she lived. Another piece of paper dated the cap to 1894. The hat is in remarkable condition. I needs to be stuffed to keep shape. The brim is supported by three wires. The lining has a series of safety pins that I think were used to secure the tissue. There are some holes and soil on the lining which I think would be pinned into the child's updo hairstyle. The rest of the hat is in excellent condition with a small area of soil, no fading, one seam that has a small area that is coming apart, and very few pin holes. In the photos, I have included a photo I found online from a catalog of children's caps 1890-1891 which features similar styles The hat measures approx. 11.5 inches across. Please review the photos as they are part of the description and email with questions.
