Municipality of Paris
engraving on wood from circa 1872, on the theme of the commune of Paris. The Paris Commune is the most important of the insurrectional communes of France in 1870-1871, which lasted 72 days, from Mars 18, 1871 to the “Bloody Week” of May 21 to 28, 1871. Composed of an engraving detailing a scene of the Communards. Entitled: “The Communards in London – Imprimerie du Qui-Vive”.
This engraving illustrates a group of men in a dark and soberly furnished interior. One reads a paper attentively while two men chat near a pile of newspapers scattered on the ground. On the right, two individuals are engaged in conversation near a desk where we see a man writing something down in a register. In the background, several figures appear to be waiting or observing the main scene. The room gives the impression of being a workspace or some sort of office with a window looking outside where you can see curious faces. The hatched style typical of woodcuts gives the scene an intense and dramatic character.
The image captures the activities of Communard exiles in London after their defeat during "Bloody Week". It bears witness to the tense political context and the continued organization of surviving members of the Commune in exile, seeking to preserve their political ideals despite their forced displacement.
