Union Pacific Across Nebraska

In August, 2010, Diverging Clear Productions visited the busiest freight railroad in the world: Union Pacific’s Council Bluffs Subdivision.

After spending the night in Union Pacific’s hometown of Omaha, we started trackside bright and early at the town of Fremont and followed the line west to North Platte. Along the way, we filmed plenty of action at towns along the route. In addition to Union Pacific hot spots such as Gibbon and Grand Island, we filmed a former Belt Railway of Chicago GP7 at a grain elevator and a Nebraska Central crew going about its work along the UP at Central City. We also spent some time pacing trains from adjacent U.S. 30 near Columbus and Maxwell.

At North Platte, we visited some of the railroad displays in city parks. Highlights included Challenger #3977 and Centennial #6922 on display alongside the Hershey, Nebraska, depot in Cody Park north of downtown. We also visited another steamer on display, 2-8-0 #480, at a park south of the railroad.

From there we visited the Golden Spike Tower And Visitor’s Center, where we were treated to stunning views of the action at Bailey Yard, the largest and busiest freight yard in the world. We also visited a trackside location at the west end of the yard.

The following day, we worked the line eastbound from North Platte to Gibbon. As busy as the railroad was on our westbound trek, the action this day was even heavier! We filmed meets at multiple locations, and twice filmed trains racing side by side on the three track mainline.

If you are a fan of the Union Pacific or modern railroading in general, you will enjoy this new DVD from Diverging Clear Productions.

This is one fast paced and action packed program!
