Rare first edition of the text of the Treaty of El Pardo signed on March 1778 between Queen Maria I of Portugal and King Charles III of Spain

The treaty of El Pardo was signed to resolve long-standing territorial disputes in America.  At the time, the Portuguese were advancing into the region of the Missiones Orientales in Brazil and parts of present day Uruguay and Paraguay.  The new treaty, recognized Portuguese domination over great part of Brazil, but in exchange for territory in America, Queen Maria ceded to Spain the islands of Annobon, Bioko (Fernando Poo), as well as parts of the Guinea Coast (together forming modern Equatorial Guinea).

With this treaty Portugal and Spain also agreed not to form alliances prejudicial to each other.  The treaty also discusses tobacco and slave trade between Brazil and West Africa.
