Liam O'Flaherty was born in Inis Mor, County Galway, and became a convinced Communist, taking part in the raising of the red flag over Dublin in protest at the establishment of the Free State in 1922. An important figure in the Irish cultural renaissance, he was, unusually, bilingual in English and Gaelic. He went to Hollywood and had his novel The Informer, filmed by John Ford in 1927, and again in 1929. Before he died he renounced Communism and returned to the Roman Catholic church.
