This Eisenhower dollar is commonly called a Blue Pack Ike. It’s called a Blue Pack Ike because it comes in a dark blue mint envelope, the same type that you may see on a proof set. There is also a blue plastic token that comes with the dollar. Blue Pack Ikes were never intended for circulation. This is the uncirculated version of the 1971 Eisenhower dollar.
While silver was removed from coinage made for circulation after 1964, aside from the Kennedy half, the uncirculated and proof versions of the Eisenhower dollar were struck in 40% silver. That means that each of these dollars contain .316 Troy oz. of silver. None of the Eisenhower dollars that were intended for circulation actually had any silver.
This coin will arrive in its original Blue Pack packaging. Please be aware of the fact that these are from 1971 and many of them have had multiple owners. While the packaging is present and the dollar is sealed, everything may not be entirely perfect. Some visible wear on the packaging should be expected, as well as the possibility of toning and discoloration on the dollar itself. The plastic that these dollars were sealed in at the mint does not prevent toning or other natural processes. The original packaging includes a dark blue mint envelope with the year and strike of the dollar. It also includes a blue plastic token sealed in plastic with the Eisenhower dollar, which has an eagle and says EISENHOWER, UNCIRCULATED SILVER DOLLAR.
The Eisenhower dollar is one of the largest coins that has been struck in recent history, and the standard issue Ike is the largest that has been minted for circulation.
The front side of this 1971-S uncirculated Eisenhower dollar depicts our 34th President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was in office from 1953 to 1961. It also has the word LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. The mint mark is located on this side of the coin as well, just below the edge of President Eisenhower’s neck. The year it was minted, 1971, is centered below Ike’s profile. The reverse shows an eagle with an olive branch about to land on the surface of the moon. Behind the eagle you can see Earth in the distance, and thirteen stars form a partial circle around the eagle. This side is inscribed with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and ONE DOLLAR. This is a very patriotic design and a reference to the first moon landing in 1969.
Some coin experts have speculated that the Eisenhower dollar will gain greater demand and popularity among collectors in the future. Take advantage of the low price on this uncirculated 1971-S Ike dollar today!
