Bo Diddley's signature syncopated shave-and-a-haircut-two-bits hambone beat came to bear his own name as the "Bo Diddley rhythm," and if he had contributed nothing else to early rock & roll, he would have still been important and influential to the shaping of the genre for that alone. But he was also a sharp performer and a fine songwriter, with tracks ranging from chugging rock & roll to doo wop to tender ballads, as this generous two-disc collection of his singles recorded between 1955 and 1962 for Chess Records' Checker Records imprint clearly documents.
