1/16 or 1.58mm 7 x 7 Core Stainless Steel (316)
Cable and kits
This exact cable is used as OEM equipment for leading kayak brands.
Many manufacturers use stainless steel for rudder cables, this is a suitable replacement for any brand of kayak that uses stainless steel.
This DIY kit allows you to choose to buy just cable, or cable and swages or cable swages and timbles and d shackels depending on what you need exactly.
As its a free shipping listing you can also for example buy 2 x 3m cables with swages instead of 1 x 6m if for example you want more swages or simply to have you rudder cable pre cut into two length.
The most common way to use this kit is to loop the stainess cable through your footrest as shown in the pictures at the top, swag it and cover the swage in heat shrink so its nice and neat and not sharp - then on the other end you loop the cable around the ferrule and swage it in place and again cover in heat shrink. then use the stainless steel d rings to attach the thimble loop to the rudder itself. But you can do it another way if you like.
Heat shrink is normally activated with a heat gun but can also be done with a lighter, match, boiling water or a heat gun.
Please note to fix the swages in place, they need to be crushed. this is done ideally with a Swaging tool. but if you do not have one of those a decent set of vice grips or a bench vice can work well - people do it many ways with hammers and all sorts - they can work but obviously a swaging tool is best.
