For French Polishing & Antique Restoration

Cabinetmakers Trade Quality

bolpol™l pumice is rigorously quality controlled by our chosen manufacturer to ensure consistent quality and, therefore, consistent results.

bolpol™ Pumice powder is all grade 1 and of high purity; containing only 100% natural mineral powder. Pumice comes from siliceous volcanic ash and the solidification of Lava permeated with gas bubbles, this produces an abrasive grit that is ideal for cleaning and polishing of softer materials.

bolpol™ Pumice powder is supplied in 4 different grades, each made up of a range of particle sizes – the finer the grade the smaller the particle sizes.

bolpol™ pumice has many varied craft uses, as a guide the larger grit sizes of 0 or FF will give a higher stock removal and are primarily used for cleaning and 1st stage surface preparation work (either by hand or in Tumbler machines) and are used for polishing glass, hard plastics and resins. The super fine and ultra-fine FFF or FFFF is widely used by Cabinetmakers and French Polishers to smooth high spots in shellac or varnish type finishes, also used as a hardwood pore/grain filler.

To rub down  Varnish, Shellac, French Polish or Lacquer finish you can use either use a French polish “rubber” this is just a pad made from some cotton waste and this is folded inside clean cotton rag,  or you can use a piece of felt wool.

1.       Apply a thin film of boiled Linseed oil or liquid paraffin over the surface.
2.       Sprinkle some powder evenly over the oil.
3.       Using either the rubber, or the felt pad, start to gently rub the surface going in the direction of the grain. When you come to the edge sweep straight across the surface and into midair to avoid an uneven finish at the edges.
4.       Periodically wipe over the surface with a clean cotton rag and inspect the surface for a uniform sheen.
5.       Repeat the above procedure until you have achieved a uniform finish.
7.       Now apply a good quality wax polish.

An alternative method to points 1 & 2 above - lightly damped the pad with some linseed oil and dab this into the Pumice. Proceed as points 3 onwards.

Other popular uses for FFF pumice include: Bar Soap, Powdered Soap, Facial Scrubs, Glass Polishing, French Polishing, Jewellery Polishing, Pottery Glazes, Gold Leafing, Hand Rubbing and Erasers.
