bolpol™ - FFF Grade Super Fine Pumice Powder - 100g

French Polishers Quality

Especially suited to Shellac & French polish finishes.

bolpol™ Pumice powder is all grade 1 high purity and 100% natural, made by grinding siliceous volcanic ash to specific grain sizes. This produces a soft abrasive grit that is ideal for cleaning and polishing softer materials, or where a harder and more aggressive abrasive would remove excessive material or scratch and damage the workpiece or the surface finish.

Additional uses for FFF Grade pumice includes metal polishing, glass polishing, hand cleaners (in both bar and liquid form) exfoliating creams.

Available in 4 different particle grit sizes ranging from coarse to ultra fine,  0, FF, FFF and FFFF ( with FFFF being the ultra fine grit)

bolpol™ pumice has been carefully graded to achieve a consistent range of particle sizes and has many craft uses. All our pumice powders are graded using 44 microns (325 mesh) as the guide to how fine or coarse each grade is; the higher the percentage the finer the powder.

FFFF - 90% finer than 44 microns

FFF - 80% finer than 44 microns

FF - 75% finer than 44 microns

0 - 50% finer than 44 microns

bolpol™ pumice has many varied craft uses; as a guide the larger grit sizes of 0 or FF will give a higher stock removal and primarily used for cleaning and 1st stage surface preparation work, either by hand or in Tumbler machines. Although the 0 or FF grits are also used for polishing glass, hard plastics and resins. The super fine and ultra fine FFF or FFFF is widely used by Cabinetmakers and French polishers to smooth high spots in shellac or varnish type finish and is also used as a hardwood pore / grain filler. This sale is for FFF super fine pumice, please see our other Ebay listings for other grades.

Information About using Pumice ( Please note this sale is only for pumice powder, any items mentioned below are not included!)

To rub down  varnish, Shellac, French Polish or lacquer finish you can use either use a French polish “rubber” this is just a pad made from some cotton waste and this is folded inside clean cotton rag,  or you can use a piece of wool felt (say 4” x 2” x ¼”)

Apply a thin film of boiled Linseed oil or liquid paraffin over the surface, you could use water, but using water can cause problems and result in excess material being removed, so water is not the best option.

Sprinkle some powder evenly over the oil.

Next, using either the rubber or the felt pad, start to gently rub the surface, going in the direction of the grain, when you come to the edge, think like you are using wood plane and sweep straight across the surface and into midair, otherwise you might get an uneven or part worn finish around the edge.

Periodically wipe over the surface with a clean cotton rag and inspect the surface for a uniform sheen.

Repeat the above procedure until you have achieved a uniform finish.

Another method, is to just lightly damped the pad with some linseed oil and dab this into the Pumice.

Now apply a good quality wax polish like Liberon Black Bison, we have written a lot of information about wax polishing in our wax polish listings.
