This particular HP Workstation can use both ECC Registered (RDIMMS) and ECC Unbuffered (UDIMMS), this auction is for RDimms.

This auction is for ECC RDimms, ECC RDimms and ECC UDimms cannot be mixed with each other, it is an either or situation.

ECC RDimms are denoted PC3-12800R, ECC UDimms are denoted PC3-12800e.

If you are not sure which dimms you have installed please ask us before making a purchase. A incorrect order will not waste our time but your own.



DETERMINING THE BEST MEMORY SPEED FOR YOU (1333Mhz/1600Mhz/1866Mhz)

The actual speed the memory runs at actually is firstly determined by the CPU that is installed, below is list of the maximum ram speed for most of the available Xeon E5 Series CPUs.

V1 E5 CPU's

  • 1066Mhz - 2609, 2603, 1607, 1603
  • 1333Mhz - 2640, 2630, 2620
  • 1600Mhz - 2690, 2680, 2670, 2667, 2665, 2660, 2650, 2643, 1660, 1650, 1620
V2 E5 CPU's
  • 1333Mhz - 2609, 2603
  • 1600Mhz - 2640, 2630, 2620, 1607
  • 1866Mhz - 2697, 2695, 2690, 2680, 2670, 2667, 2660, 2650, 2643, 2637, 1680, 1660, 1650, 1620


Example 1. Using 1866Mhz memory in a machine that will only support 1333Mhz will result in that memory being run at 1333Mhz, eg Xeon E5-2620 v1


The second Part of memory run speed formula is based upon the amount of load placed upon the CPU by the number of modules installed in your machine.

For max speed each CPU will support 4 Dimms per Channel, In a dual CPU this will be 8 Dimms per channel. This means max ram speed is only supported when populating 8 slots, However your machine has 16 Slots, This means that every 2 slots shares one Channel of memory. When you install more then one Dimm per channel, the maximum stated speed will drop by one level, below are the actual speeds when running 2 dimms per channel, using 16 Slots or any combination over 8 slots.

  • 1866Mhz (1DPC) ram will run at 1600Mhz (2DPC)
  • 1600Mhz (1DPC) ram will run at 1333Mhz (2DPC)
  • 1333Mhz (1DPC) ram will run at 1066Mhz (2DPC)
1DPC = One Dimm Per Channel. (max use 8 slots)
2DPC = Two Dimms Per Channnel. (can use 9-12 Slots)

Example 2. Running 1866Mhz memory over 12 Slots in a Dual Xeon E5-2660 v2 will result in the memory actually running at 1600Mhz. 1866Mhz memory speed may only be utilized when upto 8 memory modules are installed. If you plan to use two dimms per channel it is more cost effective to install 1600Mhz memory over 1866Mhz, this is also the case when comparing 1333Mhz ram to 1600Mhz ram.

We would recommend that you install the memory speed that will be most cost effective for you. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask as this concept can take some time to comprehend.
