Lambert and Butler issued this set in 1906 when the mass production of cigarette cards by a number of large firms was in full swing. Wills, the market leader were increasing their sales enormously, by giving away a succession of popular Heraldic sets. L &B felt that they could not afford to be left out and issued this one. In later years they were more adventurous and they built up a loyal customer base by issuing a large number of transport and science/technology sets.
This set is quite strange in that the first fifteen cards all have dense black backgrounds and the other twenty five are quite pastelly.(?) I have never managed to work out whether it was two artists working separately to complete the set, or whether King Henry V instituted a drastic change of style in the Royal Arms.
An early set, VG condition, Murray's catalogue price - £200
