Description: The giant leek (Allium giganteum) is a perennial herb with a very impressive growth height of 80 to 150 cm.
It is a very decorative display variety with stately, dense white balls up to 20 cm in diameter. It comes from the Near East and Central Asia.
It is used as an ornamental plant in parks and gardens. When grouped with several plants, it forms a wonderful ensemble in beds and borders.
But it can also enchant the stylish living ambience as a cut plant in a vase or form a very special highlight in a bucket or plant pot on the balcony or terrace. The giant leek requires a nutritious, but well-drained, well-drained soil. It prefers a sunny, dry to slightly damp location, but does not tolerate waterlogging very well.
In Central Europe, the giant leek is hardy. Propagation is by bulb division or by seeds.

Sowing: In general, the seeds are cold germs and must be stratified (cold treated). To do this, the seeds are placed in small pots with the previously moistened seeding soil, pressed down lightly and covered only minimally or not at all with soil. Then you put them in the fridge for 3 to 4 weeks. (definitely not in the freezer!). During this time, the soil must not dry out and must be kept slightly moist (no waterlogging). Also ensure regular ventilation to avoid mold growth. After stratification, keep the pot bright and rather cool (approx. 15°C). The germination of the seeds is very irregular and extends over several weeks to months. Therefore, it is important not to lose patience. Allium giganteum often only starts to grow when you already have
no longer count on it.
