Used Livescribe 4GB Echo Smart Pen with non working screen.

Pen is updated with the latest software, and has been factory reset.

If you know how to use the pen without the screen your all set.  

If not here is the basics, After registering your pen with your echo software, push the power button on the pen, and then tap on the mute icon twice and listen for the click sound to confirm the pen is on, and start writing.
