SEIKO VINTAGE WATCH: LORD MATIC 1976

Suwa Seikosha produced the 5600 series of high-end automatic watch movements for Seiko in the 1960's and 1970's.

This line was used in various Lord Matic, King Seiko, and Grand Seiko models from 1968 through 1976. It appeared first in the 1968 Lord Marvel, next in 1969 in the King Seiko 56KS, and finally in 1970 in the Grand Seiko 56GS. It was also used in two other Seiko models - the Seiko Duotime and Seiko Chronometer.

Unlike previous Grand Seiko movements, production of Calibre 5600 was highly automated. This made the movements cheaper and helps to this day since parts are more plentiful. But the speed of the movement was reduced from "Hi-Beat" 36,000 A/h of its predecessors.

The 5600 family was introduced in 1968 for the Lord Matic and first appeared in King Seiko guise the following year. This was the first Suwa movement used in the Daini King Seiko line.

A BIT OF HISTORY:

According to The Seiko Book, commercial production of the cal. 5606, based on the 56 caliber stream, started in 1968. The 5606 had a 21600 beat rate, offered quick set day and date, hand winding from the crown, and the ability to precisely set the seconds though a hacking lever. The 56 stream seams to have been developed between two other caliber streams, the 51(starting in 1967), and the 52 (starting in 1970). When the 51 was developed, it had a thickness of 4.9mm. The Cal. 56 stream had a reduced thickness of 4.3 mm, and the 52 stream further reduced the movements thickness to 3.9mm. In this continuing effort to reduce the thickness of its mid to high grade movements, many novel design elements were incorporated into the 5606.

THE HISTORY OF SEIKO BEGINS WITH ITS FOUNDER:

The Meji period of Japan, 1868-1912, was a tectonic shift in Japanese culture. Prefectures replaced feudal domains, railways cut through mountains and the traditional seasonal calendar and time system was abandoned for the Western Gregorian calendar. The traditional clocks of the last 300 years became useless, so Japan began importing Western clocks and watches.

In 1881, Kintaro Hattori started K. Hattori & Co. in Toyko, repairing and selling imported clocks and watches. After 9 years, Hattori opened the Seikosha factory so he could make wall clocks (In Japanese, Seiko means exquisite/success and the suffix -sha means company/business). During the Russo-Japanese War, the Seikosha factory was required to make munitions for the war effort. This experience taught Hattori about machine assembly and mass-production which he introduced into the manufacture of timepieces after the war.
