The Saint Old Time Radio Shows

Simon Templar, AKA "The Saint" wasn’t really a Saint at all…in fact, the name was the underworld's alias for this famous radio detective, who, like Robin Hood of old, often did a little bad to get the "goods" on his criminals of choice. The distinctive voice of Vincent Price spoke for "The Saint" who was a bon vivant that savored detection as an art form. There are few similarities between him and his American hard-boiled detectives-in-arms such as Sam Spade, Boston Blackie, Phillip Marlow, although closer in spirit is Nero Wolfe.

Novelist Leslie Charteris wrote over a hundred Saint Adventures in short story, magazines and even films. Many of the "Saint" movies starred George Sanders. When in 1947, The Saint was developed for radio, the first choice was Sanders. But he quickly stepped aside, however, and the legendary Vincent Price went on to give the radio public its most memorable performances.

The Saint's crime fighting was sophisticated. He was usually sharp enough to stick to slinging witty words like arrows, since he's the "Robin Hood of Modern Crime", but sometimes thugs want their slugs. Lawrence Dobkin was "Louie," the (Brooklyn) Cab Driver, who kept The Saint streetwise while getting him across town. A congenial cast of characters and special guest stars was always on hand, or fist, thanks to the witty scripts. Orchestral scores added to the enjoyment, too, but it was the distinct singular sound and style of Mr. Vincent Price that gave The Saint it’s halo.

There's hardly a more enjoyable radio detective show out there!
