My Friend Irma Old Time Radio Shows

My Friend Irma is the hilarious radio sitcom that tells the story of a ditzy blonde stenographer named Irma Peterson (ably played by Marie Wilson) and the daily high-jinx that she gets into with her screwy friends. One of Irma's best friends was her logical and very dependable roommate, and narrator of the show, Jane Stacy. Jane, portrayed first by Cathy Lewis and briefly by Joan Banks, provided a sane counterpoint to Irma's innocent idiocy with much the same on-air chemistry as George Burns and Gracie Allen of Burns and Allen

The series ran on CBS Radio from April 11, 1947 to August 23, 1954 and was an overnight smash hit.  Later, in January 1952, a television version premiered with the same cast and was the first series telecast from the CBS Television City facility in Hollywood.  The entire radio/television series was such a success with audiences that in 1949, Marie Wilson appeared with Diana Lynn in My Friend Irma, the movie, which is credited for the career launches of the then little known Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

The show's creator Cy Howard, who also went on to produce Life with Luigi, was hesitant to cast the lead roles because he knew that the show's ultimate success depended on the actresses' perfect portrayal of their characters. His uncertainty flew straight out the window when Cathy Lewis arrived to read the part of Jane Stacy.  With Lewis on board, the show would soar, giving an average Hooper rating of 20-plus!

Marie Wilson was cast as Irma Peterson after performing a satirical striptease in 2,332 performances of Ken Murray's Blackouts.  Howard was impressed with her portrayal of innocent bewilderment. "She's so much like Irma that I have to rewrite the things she says to make them believable," he told Radio Life. Wilson herself often complained that people were actually disappointed to discover that she was not the innocent character she portrayed on radio.
