Inner Sanctum Mysteries
Old Time Radio Shows

Old Time Radio had an uncanny ability to produce bone-chilling emotions from a simple radio console in the living room. Picture in your mind, a darkened room, perhaps a flickering candle or fireplace, and the sounds of a squeaking door with ominous organ music. A decade or more before television, radio horror serials terrified their audiences so effectively the hair would literally stand up on the back of their necks! Horror shows could take the lowly listener into the cold darkened night as a willing companion on an unknown journey of terror, fear and dread. Horror stories were ably recreated by exceptionally talented actors, mysterious sound effects, and of course the ominous organ which all together was presented by a mysterious, spine-chilling host. And of course Inner Sanctum was the crème de la crème in horror radio! Even today the show remains a favorite of many old time radio fans, who listened back then when these shows first flared the imaginations of all but the most hardened of listeners.

Today's Tales of the Crypt fans will find striking similarities to Inner Sanctum. Each week the show opened with the ever ominous organ music, the turning of a doorknob and the famous squeaking door that opened ever so slowly into the dark forbidding recesses of the Inner Sanctum. Once inside, the listener was greeted by the goulish host Raymond, who would introduce the evening's story with a dry joke or two before escorting them on their 30-minute journey.

Raymond Edward Johnson played the spooky host from Inner Sanctum's beginnings in January 1941 until 1945 until Paul McGrath took over as Raymond.

The show's host was full of dry humor and gruesome puns, but all that clever humor was merely a fiendish warm-up for the main story - a terrifying tale filled with bumps, twists and turns along the way - that took you to to places you normally wouldn't want to go, but in the end were glad you went!

An absolute must for every radio collection.....if you dare!
