The Bureau of American Ethnology (or BAE, originally, Bureau of Ethnology) was established in 1879 by an act of Congress for the purpose of transferring archives, records and materials relating to the Indians of North America from the Interior Department to the Smithsonian Institution. Each of the 48 annual reports is a treasure trove of details about Native Americans, their lives, beliefs, customs,history, culture. language and so much more. Each report contains several hundreds to over 1000 pages of material, photographs, drawings, language dictionaries and much more.
