To celebrate the European Championship finals played in England in June 1996, the Royal Mail invited a team of football writers and experts to draw up a shortlist of great players.
The only stipulation was that these players were DECEASED.

THIS FIRST DAY COVER HAS A POSTAGE STAMP FOR EACH OF THESE SPECIAL AND GREAT PLAYERS:
1...Dixie Dean  (Everton's man for all seasons)
2...Bobby Moore (Quite simply the greatest defender of all time)
3...Duncan Edwards (The Busby Babe was the complete player)
4...Billy Wright (An inspirational captain for Wolves and England)
5...Danny Blanchflower (Eloquent and thoughtful, on and off the pitch)

Includes a leaflet with all the details, photographs and facsimile signatures...including the following:

The public was also invited to nominate the Greatest British Player and Team of all time.
Of the thousands of votes cast...one player stood out above all the rest - GEORGE BEST.
The voting was close for the greatest Team !!
