Arthur Luiz Piza

Arthur Luiz Piza was born in Brazil in 1928 and moved to Paris in the 1950s. After studying etching with Friedlaender and mastering the traditional techniques, he developed his own technique using thick copper plates into which he incises and gouges shapes and lines deeply into the surface. His technique is a combination of engraving and etching, and requires special inks and multiple plate inkings to achieve the depth of color and textures in his work.

Piza has been associated with the Latin American geometric constructivist movement based in Paris, although his approach and techniques have evolved far beyond the founding ideas of this group. His work is in major public collections world-wide, including MOMA in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, and the Museé d’Art Nationale (Centre Pompidou) in Paris.

Piza had a Retrospective in 2002 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which was previewed in Paris.
