To lock together - use special Jeton pliers or use 2 serrated jaw long nose pliers such as these, securely grab each end/piece with pliers and press the ball and socket together hard until you hear a click. There is no secret to it, just brute force. To make it easier, freeze the ball part prior to assembly for a few minutes and put the socket part into boiling water for a few seconds.
