Title: The New York Detective Police Officer - Never Before Printed

Author: John B Williams

Publisher: John Maxwell and Company, London

Edition: First edition, first printing

Date Printed: 1865

Description:  The true first printing.  315 pages. 6 inches by 4.25 inches. Original plain end papers. Very early detective fiction, comprising 22 stories presented as fact, featuring the detective James Brampton, some of whose characteristics were later used by Conan Doyle when creating Sherlock Holmes.

Original pictorial paper covered boards. In attractive but worn condition, with wear, bumping and rubbing  (see pictures). Internally clean and free of inscriptions, apart from a few light pencil doodles to the rear endpapers (see picture). Binding tender at front hinge, revealing webbing, but holding firm, sound and square. A good honest unrestored copy of this very scarce book.

This is the true first printing, published in cheap "yellow back" pictorial binding by John Maxwell of London, printed by Savill and Edwards of Covent Garden. An American edition was published under the title Leaves From the Note-Book of a New York Detective later in the same year.
