Description:  Agnes Gunther was a German poet and author.  Her novel, Saint and Fool, was one of the most widely read sentimental novels of the first half of the twentieth century.  In an era of industrialization, urbanization, the emergence of a working class, and challenges to women's roles, some authors embraced the "new" woman.  Gunther, however, looked to the past for conservative models of feminine virtue.  Her heroines embodied idealized virtues from an age that was ending: gentleness, deference, self-sacrifice, stillness, piety, but with a powerful inner vision.  Written entirely in Swedish.

Don't get a reprint of this fascinating and culturally important work when you can own an original piece of literary history!     

Condition:  This vintage book is nearly one hundred years old and has been lovingly cared for.  The leather hardcover shows some wear around the edges and corners (see pictures), but the gilt lettering is still bright.  The inside pages are in very good condition for the age.  No ripped, loose or missing pages.  No bent corners, no writing, no highlighting, no creasing.  The binding is tight.  The page edges are speckled.  It is evident that this book was a prized possession and well-cared for.
