9.25 Sterling silver is 92.5 by weight of silver and 7.5 by weight of other metals, usually copper.  Sterling silver has a minimum millesimal fineness of 925.   -----   99.9% pure silver is too soft for producing functional jewelry; therefore, to strengthen the Silver it is usually mixed with an alloy of copper while preserving the appearance of the precious metal.
