For your consideration is an unusual prototype or "concept" book containing artwork by American maritime artist Ralph E. Power. Sorry for the awkward transition between the title and what is actually being offered, it really is hard to describe in one line. This is maybe best described as what may happen when an artist rather than a writer has an idea for a book. He constructs the book itself and then inserts his ideas and all of the illustration art. Mr. Power titled this one, "The Square Rigger and Other Sailing Craft". He was a maritime artist so he wanted to develop a book about sailing ships, mostly somewhat ancient ones.

This is easily the most unusual art item I think I've ever owned. This is part of a larger group of works by Ralph Power that I bought, maybe 20 or so years ago. I saved this because I was so intrigued by it. The book itself is no different from any other small book from the 30's that you would find in a library or book store. It is hardbound and measures 9 1/2 x 8" with 14 numbered pages. The print, the art, the lettering inside and out, everything is all hand drawn by Power himself. The frontispiece is an original sailing ship watercolor that measures 6 1/4 x 5 1/2". The title page is all drawn in black ink by Power. The forward, that is nothing more than lines drawn by Power, is signed by Josephus Daniels, a newspaper publisher from North Carolina. The preface is 3 1/2 pages of "lines" flanked by 2 ink drawings. Chapter one, there's only 1 chapter, is titled Egyptians and Phoenicians and contains lined pages to imitate text and 14 ink drawings, 2 of them full page. There are a few pencil note instructions in the book as well as a handwritten note with suggestions, signed by whoever he was working with to write this book.

I know it's a bit odd, and that being said, not for everybody. But it is a highly unusual art item by a talented, well respected early 20th century American artist. The watercolor alone is masterfully executed. I've said about all I can say. Please study the photos and ask any questions you may have. Quoted shipping is to the lower 48 states and includes insurance. Thanks.
