A fabulous book here.

From the 18th Century account's books belonging to John Dent ...one of which is stained green vellum with gilt tooling upon the fold over flap cover his name JOHN DENT 1759 embossed onto it.

Marbled paper within.

It is typical of the period with the green vellum flap over part... the metal catch has long since gone but the book is in wonderful condition.

Hand written wording on the back Accounts of Rents & Cash from 1763.

First thing inside is a small slot which nothing in it.

Inside on the marbled paper it has his JOHN DENT Coat of Arms book plate and relates to the Shortflatt Estate, all hand written inside which can easy be read Golden Flatts Farm at Seaton Carew with various rent years etc.

The manuscript wording is relating to the accounts of the estate and cash flow etc - expenditure, tenants rents and all that sort of thing.

More interestingly though there are pages of  " copy " letters John Dent must have sent to various people over the period of time.. this is not unusual to find during this period.. in some official places such as solicitors they had books especially for copying letters. called COPY BOOKS. This book has been used to copy letters....which is really good for the historian or the related family members wanting to know about their family history..as the original letters will long since be gone and often used to start the fire the next day.

The book has been obviously in their bookshelf and has been used at a later date for family related notes and items.....a hundred years later they are still writing in the book !

Then on page 99 in red ink it says this farm was sold in 1901 for £10,400 and money invested in mortgage at Byker.

On a number of pages it is like a diary of Family Events.. which makes interesting reading right through the FULLERTON ( worlds famous greyhound of the day who won the Waterloo Cup 3 years in a row 1890-92 trained by Edward Dent ) days through to about 1926 so this book has been written in by William Dent at a later time.

Page 37 is written in red ink and is titled EDWARD DENT ( The Squire ) and begins with My father Edward Dent succeeded his brother William Seton Dent in 1880.

It then goes onto say about the Squire being remembered for being a famous trainer and breeder of greyhounds and Fullerton being in South Kensington museum.
Fullerton was later sold to Col North for 850 Guineas. He bred and trained 6 Waterloo Cup winners in 8 years. It then says my father once took 35 greyhounds to exercise on a public road by himself, and took 24 greyhounds to be sold at the Barbican himself too.
He loved hunting and once hunted 164 days in one season on 9 different horses in the days before the motor car...it is signed by William Dent in 1926. Edward Dent also wrote in the book in 1916.

Page 38 is the pedigree of Dents.

This book is 6 inch x 9 and half inch x 1 and half inch deep.

I have not had time to read it all. There may well be more interesting snippets in it.

A very interesting hand written book from this very interesting archive which belonged to the Edward Dent family.
