Another interesting manuscript book from the Edward Dent family archive of Shortflatt Tower in Northumberland.

Brown leather hard backed says MOTOR EXPENSES on the spine..this book is very interesting to me and I am sure to many other folks that are into classic cars....it goes from about 1922 and a third of the book is all hand filled in with manuscript wording.

Two thirds EMPTY.

Its like a diary of event for the cars usage and different cars they bought through the period of time.

The pages are set out in columns and they have written their own column types in between the proper printed wording.... DATE - PETROL - MILEAGE - TYRES - ROUTE - LUBRICANT.

So starting with April 5th 1922 with a HAMPTON COUPE bought from Messr's Marshall's Ltd of 17 Hanover Square ..the car had 106 miles on the clock delivery from Stroud to London ....says particular trouble with the Partridges tyres so they changed them to Michelin and Goodrich ...the car ran well, petrol consumption bad with interesting routes where they went on certain days too - May 29th clutch leather burnt out at bottom of Minehead hill returned to London in hired car - July 17th York to Shortflatt 8 gallons used, Partridge tyre burst at Northallerton, the day before the speedometer broke at 61st mile, tea with the Kitsons at 1150 feet up near Bovey Tracey, there seems to be a lot of punctured tyres back then, punctured tyre on way to look for another country house to buy, still searching for house no luck, interesting he says about the totals of gallons used, oil used in gallons, miles and miles to gallon being 26 and cost of running the car for the year was £160.

1925 saw them get a Lambda Lancia Saloon, it had 4180 miles on the clock, March 1st they collided with a steam engine and coal wagon at a sharp bend near Waterstone ridge going to south Dorset point to point with a huge list of damage.....costing £56 - 10 shillings 8 pence......the car was doing 19.75 miles per gallon .... May 1st a speed of 72 mph was attained on the north road, the car was full of luggage and 4 passengers.

They got a Morris Oxford Saloon 1928...they didnt have it long before they exchanged it for a  Morris Oxford Club Coupe 1929 ...then a 1935 Morris Oxford six cylinder black standard saloon cost £285 doing 15500 miles in the first year then another car in 1939 Vauxhall which had done 9000 miles. ...that is the last entry in this book.

The writings are very small but its like a DIARY it has every journey they did, who was on the trip and places they stayed and who they saw.
The book is 9 x 5 and half inch x 3/4 inch deep.

A very interesting hand written book from this very interesting archive which belonged to the Edward Dent family.
