The batteries were charged with the provided charger, however I don't know if the battery cells are dead, but when placed inside the camcorder, the "caution" light blinks and the "Batt" light blinks. With the battery, the camcorder will not turn on, nor is there a response from any other buttons.
When using the charger as a DC power supply directly to the camera, it will not power on either. However, when pushing the "eject tape" button, the "caution" light turns on briefly while the camcorder does make mechanical sounds attempting to open the tape slot, however the tape slot does not open. When the sounds stop, the "caution" light turns off. Inside the viewfinder, the "WW, "C", and "L" lights turn on when pushing the "eject tape" button. There is no other response from the camcorder when plugged in to DC power.
