Back-side
Miss Columbia has been a symbol of our nation since the very beginning. It emerged from
the imagination of Chief Justice Samuel Sewall of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1697,
he wrote a poem suggesting that America's Colonies be called Columbina, a feminization
of Christopher Columbus' last name.
By the 1890s, women would dress up to be Miss Columbia for patriotic events. In the 1900's
a girl's wish would to be Miss Columbia in the Fourth of July Parades, many married women
would do the same.
Soon the arrival of the Statue of Liberty started to take over the role as America's symbol when
it was dedicated on October 28, 1886.In various World War I posters Columbia pleaded, beseeched, and implored viewers to save
food, send their sons to war and buy bonds.
The symbolic war shield that Miss Columbia is holding shows the world that we are a
peaceful nation.
The bucket of arrows (next to Miss Columbia's leg) shows that although we are a peaceful
nation, we also believe in "Power for Peace". We will use arms to defend our nation and
our way of life.
A religious cross was designed into the coin.
The coin also shows a religious "Lord, protect our military as they protect us" and "God
bless the United States".
Miss Columbia proudly carries the American flag.
