Description: A scarce and important book of Irish fiction, printed and published in Dublin in 1844. Selina Bunbury (1802-82) was born in Castlebellingham, Co. Louth, the daughter of a Church of Ireland clergyman. She later travelled widely and lived for some years in England.

In her preface to this novel about Guy Fawkes, she claims to have written it many years earlier, before Ainsworth's novel of 1840, and anticipates criticism that "it is too friendly to Popery". She also expresses pride that the book is to be produced in Dublin, using native Irish illustrators.

Original publisher's red gilt decorative cloth hardback. Original endpapers. 9.25 x 6 inches.  591 pages, illustrated throughout.  The book is in very pleasing condition, with some bumping to the edges, and slight fading to the spine (see pictures)  Internally clean. Signature of John Armstrong to front free endpaper. Some browning to prelims, especially the title page (see picture) but generally clean and bright. Binding sound and square.

A very nice example of this scarce and important book.
