What is Sea Buckthorn?

Sea Buckthorn (Hipphophae rhamnoides) is a shrubby plant that originates from the Himalayas but is now widely naturalised in coastal areas around the UK. Its bright orange berries have been used in the past as food but more recently they have been recognised as a food supplement. The berries from the Sea Buckthorn plant are not only very rich in antioxidants but also in the Omega 7 essential fatty acids (palmitoleic acid) as well as the Omega 9 fatty acid, oleic acid. While some of the omega fatty acid family have become quite well known in the health and wellness world (such as omega-3, which supports our anti-inflammatory function), omega-7 is less famous. However, just like the other omegas, omega-7, also known as palmitoleic acid, is immensely healthy for us. Sea Buckthorn fruita EW. good source of Vitamin C and other antioxidant flavonoids in addition to minerals, essential fatty acids, amino acids and Vitamin E.

The oil is commonly used in cosmetics for treating and revitalising dry, flaky, or rapidly aging skin, since the berries contain an abundance of vitamin A, (alpha- and beta-carotene) and other carotenoids as well as vitamin E. Sea buckthorn treats inflammation, infection, and a variety of conditions and in one study, sea buckthorn was found to have 190 bioactive substances and touted as one of the most valuable plants for potential natural remedies. Extracts from the fruit can be used in the treatment of a variety of conditions all related to inflammation and infection. Sea buckthorn contains antioxidants that promote heart health and is known to improve circulation and heart function, according to several studies. The plant contains a high percentage of vitamin K, which helps to normalise blood clotting. Sea buckthorn helps reduce levels of LDL or "bad" cholesterol and raises HDL (good) cholesterol in the blood due to its high concentrations of antioxidants. Finally Sea buckthorn helps boosts immune function, with more vitamin C than an orange.
