Product Description
The dreamy middle tempos, chiming guitars, and ringing harmonies that pour from the speakers at the start of "I've Waited So Long"--the lead-off track on the Stands' ALL YEARS LEAVING--transport the listener to the coast of California in 1966. Here, the Byrds are playing on the radio, while brilliant sunshine filters through a pair of rose-colored granny glasses. Needless to say, Britain's Stands are unabashedly retro, with a sound that draws heavily on the aforementioned Byrds. Trebly electric-guitar lines weave arpeggios around the three-chord structures, while Howie Payne channels Roger McGuinn to astonishing effect.
The shuffling title track and the surging "When This River Rolls Over You," with its Dylan-esque lyrics and Dylan/McGuinn vocal inflections, keep the band's influences proudly on its sleeve. But the lovely minor-key "It's Only Everything" sounds like a cross between Neil Young and Oasis, connecting the Stands--at least in part--to their British contemporaries. The biting "Here She Comes Again" flaunts a classic pop structure, while the heavily psychedelic "The Big Parade" could fit alongside John Lennon's contributions to THE WHITE ALBUM. With its drowsy melodies and gorgeous, multi-part harmonies, ALL YEARS LEAVING is like a pleasantly remembered dream.
