The Lore of the Black Dipsea Shirt

There's no prize money at The Dipsea Race--there doesn't have to be. For the event's cult followers, receiving one of its fabled black T-shirts is reward enough. Organizers award the top 35 finishers black cotton shirts with their finishing place on the back.

THE ONLY ONE ON EBAY OR ANYWHERE! ONLY ONE ON EBAY.

Dipsea shirts, now prized possessions, were introduced to reduce chaos at the finish line--and they weren't always black. In 1974, an official lost track of runners' order at the finish and runners had to tell organizers their place. In 1975, to avoid confusion, organizers gave numbered shirts--oversized, to ensure they'd fit everyone--to the first 25 finishers in the chute...

In 1978, organizers introduced the black shirts. The top 35 received shirts with the race logo on the front...
...and their place on the back in gold. The lettering changed to silver in 1979 and has remained the same ever since. That year, the awarding of shirts became a postrace ceremony; runners line up in order and shirts are worn backward so the finishing place appears on the front.
