Distylium racemosum seeds can take 2 to 3 months to germinate .
Virtually unknown, unidentifiable, unheralded and unloved, except to the cadre of collectors who desire one of every plant—are evergreen members of the Hamamelidaceae witch hazel family, the species sporting small apetalous red-maroon flowers from the leaf axils in late winter-early spring, positioned among blue-green to lustrous dark green foliage.
Although growth rate is slow, it can grow up to 3m in height. It is a hermaphrodite plant that buds leaves in January, starts flowering in March to April (spring) and matures with ripe seeds in June all the way to August.
It has dark-to-blue-green leaves that can grow up to 1.5 inches wide and 2.75 inches long.
