An important never been seen before unique manuscript ode by Sir Wilfrid Lawson, 2nd Bart.

This is an original, hand written poem by Sir Wilfrid Lawson, 2nd Baronet of Brayton Hall, Aspatria Carlisle.

It is titled: The Pig . 2nd Ode

I can't really read it fully but it definitely mentions a little pun about saving his bacon which is funny.
Although it doesn't seem to be signed anywhere, it has been written on paper headed from Brayton, Carlisle.

Similar letter headed written and signed letters are known and can be found "on line" from Sir Wilfrid Lawson if you want to compare.

This is a very interesting and personal ode sent to the Curwen family of Workington Hall, Cumbria.

The headed paper has a green embossed name BRAYTON CARLISLE this is referring to Brayton Hall Carlisle the home of Sir Wilfrid Lawson. The second line says " my dear Curwen " and the last line says " Workington Hall "

It is about a pig and eating it for Christmas, but personalised in relation to his relationship to the Curwen's of Workington Hall.

The letter paper has a watermark Original Turkey Mill Kent. You can google this to see it was known as this name about 1859 onwards.

The letter has been folded and it has an address on it in pencil Prater & Co, Bedford St, Covent Garden. I cannot read the name very well.

The connection between Brayton Hall, Carlisle  and the Curwens of Workington Hall.

Sir Wilfrid Lawson 1829 - 1906 was an MP and a humourist in the House of Commons. He married Mary Pocklington Senhouse of Netherhall, Maryport, Cumberland. They had eight children, one of which was called Mabel who got married in 1895 to Alan De Lancy Curwen of Workington Hall.

This family is related to a number in Queensland Australia now.

About 17 miles between both properties.

This Pig Ode has provenance direct from the late E.H. Susan Thornely who had previously been married to the late Lieut Commander Edward Stanley Chance Curwen and his relations formerly of Workington Hall. Susan Thornely was famous in her own right being High Sheriff of Cumbria in 2009 as well as doing much for the local community. All these relationships can be found " on line " easy enough.

I have included an antique book titled Cartoon in Rhyme and Line which is a selection of Sir Wilfrid's poems that have been illustrated by F. Carruthers Gould and 1st published by Fisher Unwin in 1905. The book I bought especially to be a GO-WITH for the letter as its from Sir Wilfrid Lawsons house and hand written by him. The book is fairly easy to find in this condition and only cost me £30, so my price is for the unique never been seen before Pig Ode.

In collectable condition with normal signs of age and use wear.
Please see pictures for more details and visual confirmation of condition.

The letter headed paper is double sided as usual and is 10 x 8 inch when folded out.

The book measures approx. 8 and 3/4 inches x 7 inches and has 132 numbered pages.

Polite Notice.... The Pig Ode can easy be read and I have not typed it all out to see here in my description as I feel that would spoil the surprise and intrigue for the buyer of the ode. If everyone and their granny has seen it before hand its not as thrilling is it !
The pen is obscuring it for copyright purposes too as I know there are unscrupulous folks about.

A very interesting item for the serious collector of un published poems, for a local Cumbria museum or social history group alike.
