1800s RARE JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD “SCHOOL of YOKOHAMA” PHOTOGRAPH. PACKED STREET.



On offer is a 100% genuine photograph from an Oriental Photographic Album that was dated 1904. The albums' contents consisted of numerous gelatin silver photos from the Meiji period with dates ranging from the 1860s to c1900. The contents of the album mainly featured “School of Yokohama photographers works + a smattering of others, all taken from the original negatives & reproduced on very thin paper. A lot of these photos were hand coloured, some have faded with age while others have retained good sharp features and are a fascinating snapshot of life in Japan between 120 to 160 years ago.

This particular photograph measures 130 mms x 85 mms & has been attached to professional grade acid free white cardboard backing. The photo is slightly hard to interpret, its either a crowded market / street scene or a festival / parade scene, the city is more than likely Yokohama. The rear is blank. The exact age & original photographer is unknown.
