Rare CHEF MAJOLICA DECANTER SWISS MUSIC BOX (working) – c.1930

This is an Awesome CHEF MAJOLICA DECANTER SWISS MUSIC BOX.

This is a rare and whimsical German Antique Figural Decanter with music box built in. The subject matter includes a standing man, a  Chef, with an apron, large bow tie, shirt, pants, boots, and military cap; he holds a chalice in his left hand.

The Chef stands atop a grassy knoll and leans back on a large tree trunk. The word Garmisch and a cot of arms are on the apron

The modeling, decorating, and glaze are well done with typical colors of majolica pottery: creamy white background decorated with mustard yellow, blue, green, beige, and brown.

The rounded plinth base has the music box, screws, stays, start/stop mechanism, and winding key ;

A MUSIC BOX is built into the base, which is activated by a button on the underside; when the nutcracker is lifted, the music box is activated- it plays a lovely air.  Once the CHEF MAJOLICA DECANTER SWISS MUSIC BOX is placed back on the table, the song stops;

The underside has the winder key and the wooden access panel to the music box. It is stamped MADE IN SWITZERLAND.

The bottom underside rim foot is unglazed typical of pottery of the region.

Dimensions:                    11.0 In. Tall x 4.1 In. Wide x 4.1 In. Deep

Weight:                             1 Lb., 4.7 Oz

The estimated date is circa 1930.

The CHEF MAJOLICA DECANTER SWISS MUSIC BOX is in good condition- noting on the the backside of the right hand the bottle has been broken off, and the decal work on the front apron has been rubbed off over time . Otherwise, condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing, and fretting. Overall, this work is sound, having no chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. It is noted that old majolica is not inherently "perfect" - pieces were mold formed by hand in this era and as such have marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over. This is not damage- this is part of the history of old majolica and faience pottery and how it was made. This item is sold as is, as described. Please see all photos which are a part of this description. Please note; photos have been taken in indirect sunlight; therefore, reflections and lighting spots may appear, but do not necessarily indicate defects.

Garmisch

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a German ski resort in Bavaria, formed when 2 towns united in 1935. It's a prominent destination for skiing and ice skating as well as hiking. The town lies near the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, with a 2,962m summit accessed by cogwheel train and cable car. Garmisch is considered the more fashionable section, while Partenkirchen's cobblestone streets retain a traditional Bavarian feel.
