This is an antique desk hand wax seal matrix with a polished mottled coloured agate handle. 

It has a citrine matrix that has been engraved with a family LIVERY crest of 6 crossed arrows and a device in the middle with what I originally thought was a Spanish - European Hat above. 

I have been corrected by someone into heraldry and they told me this is the Arms of the CECIL family, related to Queen Elizabeth I Secretary of State and Descendants, The Marquesses of Exeter and Salisbury.

So now I have had chance to look into the livery crest of the Cecil family I can see this is a very interesting seal. 

What a fabulous pressie if you happen to have the surname CECIL as you will have a job to replicate this particular seal if you wanted one bespoke made for someone. 


It is mounted in unmarked gold metal. 

No maker's marks or metal marks.

I have included a reversed photo of the matrix to show the engraving as it would be the correct way round in the wax.

In collectable condition with normal signs of age and use wear. There may be some tiny nibbles on the edges but no damage from what I can see.

It measures approx. 65mm long.
The matrix measures approx. 16mm x 14mm.

It all weighs approx. 20.4 grams.

Scale is usually an English 1 penny coin which is 20mm in diameter which is just short of 7/8ths of an inch in diameter.
