1994's SON OF ALTERED BEAST is a companion piece to Matthew Sweet's similarly-titled 1993 album in sort of the same way that Neil Young's LIVE RUST is a companion to RUST NEVER SLEEPS. (Sweet's live raveup on Young's "Don't Cry No Tears" only brings this comparison home.) Opening with a punchy remix of ALTERED BEAST's "Devil with the Green Eyes" and closing with the studio outtake "Ultrasuede," SON OF ALTERED BEAST includes five killer live tracks between those two songs. The live versions of "Superdeformed," "Someone To Pull The Trigger," "Knowing People" and "I Wanted To Tell You" are rawer than the studio renditions, with guitarists Richard Lloyd and Robert Quine allowed much freer rein than when they are in the studio. The results recall Lloyd's old band Television and Quine's years with Lou Reed as much as they do earlier Sweet albums like GIRLFRIEND.
