This sermon refers to an Auto da Fé
ceremony by the Portuguese Inquisition that took place in Lisbon on October 11th
of 1654, where numerous were sentenced and punished.
One of the victims, garroted and burned at the stake,
was Francisco Gomes Henriques (c.1588-1654), nicknamed “Forragaitas” (The Scrooge),
a rich trader and banker, whose one of the sons was Monsignor António Mendes
Henriques, a high ecclesiastical dignitary in Rome, protégé and secretary of
Pope Innocent X.
Other victims sentenced to be burned were Jerónimo
Rodrigues de Figueira, New Christian, shoemaker, and soldier, accused of Judaism,
and Leonor de Amaral, New
Christian, 38 years old, accused of relapse in Judaism.
Even though hundreds of Auto da Fé ceremonies
were performed in Portugal, only 70 sermons of this kind were known to be published. All rare.
