Phillips, de Pury & Luxembourg's Auction of 20-21st Century Design Art on December 8, 2003 brought $1,612,094.

The top lot sold was Jean Prouve's "Afrique" Table, circa 1952, which inspired competitive bidding, sending the price soaring over the estimate of $80,000-120,000 to fetch $191,000, setting a world record for the designer.

Contemporary designs shone. Works by Ron Arad motivated competitive bidding, and "Italian Fish," 1988, an important chair from the 1980s sold for $35,850 over an estimated $18,000-20,000. The cover lot, "Table from the Fondation Cartier Installation, Paris, 1994" by Arad, brought $89,625 over an estimate of $25,000-$35,000, achieving a world record for the designer.

Constantin Boym's whimsical "Taxi Cab Chairs" aroused much interest; the multicolored "Protoype," 2001 (lot 197), sold for $8,000 over $2,000-$3,000. The unpainted version fetched $8,000, setting a record for the artist.

The designs of the irrepressible Campana Brothers, Fernando and Humberto, also sold very well, and set a new record for the designers at auction. "Coral," 2000, a prototype couch of painted iron rocketed above the estimate of $7,000-9,000 to bring $23,900 and "Banquette," constructed of stainless steel and stuffed toy alligators, fetched $14,340 against an estimate of $5,000-7,000.

Interest in icons of modern design remains strong, as evidenced by the interest works such as Gerrit Rietveld's "Zig Zag Chair with Armrests," circa 1940 which incited vigorous bidding and soared above its estimate of $12,00-18,000 to fetch $26,290.

Collectors continue to show interest in fine French decorative arts. A pair of "SN37" Armchairs, circa 1923, by Pierre Chareau brought $101,160 over an estimate of $60,00-80,000, and Jean Dunand's stunning "Fish" six-panel screen, circa 1923, fetched $81,260. Lamps by Desny rounded out the French section of the sale; an important floor lamp, circa 1930, sold for $95,600, a pair of Desny lamps circa 1920, brought $11,950 and a second pair, circa 1930, sold for $26,290.

Alexander Payne, Director of 20-21st Century Design, said "We are delighted to see the strength of interest in Post-War avant garde work and in the adventurous Contemporary design pieces, which greatly exceeded expectations. Credit: Phillips.
