You are bidding on about 20 LAWSON CYPRESS SEEDS -  Chamaecyparis lawsoniana .

This is one of the most important conifers in ornamental horticulture. Lawson cypress or Port Orford cedar, as it is known in its native range and by foresters, is restricted in nature to a narrow strip of the Oregon-California coast and to the mountains of northern California. It was once an important timber tree for the region. Old growth stands were scattered in small groves, the trees potentially growing for 500 years and reaching a height of around 220 feet (70 meters).

Overview: a narrowly conical tree that may be more than 60 metres (200 feet) tall and 6 metres (about 20 feet) in diameter. The trunk often forks. The bark is cracked into vertical plates and the twigs are a dark bluish-grey.  It is a very hardy tree; over 200 forms are cultivated as ornamental's in North America and Great Britain

Leaves: short scale-like leaves are grouped in fours and hide the twigs, forming flat planes. They are closely pressed together producing flat sprays of foliage. They are green with a whitish tinge underneath.

Flowers: minute flowers, which look like buds, open at the twig tips in spring. Male flowers are crimson, becoming yellow with pollen, and females are blue.

Fruits: cones ripen from female flowers, starting green, then turning cream and finally ending brown. They are pea-sized with broad scales.

Other uses of Lawson Cypress:

Plants can be grown as a tall hedge They are very tolerant of clipping so long as this does not extend into the brown barked wood since trees cannot regenerate from this. Any trimming should be done in the summer. Certain dwarf forms can be used for ground cover, the cultivars "Knowefieldensis", "Nidiformis" and "Tamariscifolia" have been recommended. The branches have been used to make brooms.

Wood - very close-grained, hard, strong, durable, easily worked, light, abounding in fragrant resin, acid resistant. One of the world's finest timbers, it is widely used for flooring, fencing, making boats etc. It is now in short supply due to over-harvesting without replanting.

Propagation of the herb:

Seed - sow March/April in a seedbed outdoors. The seed is best sown in pots in a frame. Seed can take 18 months to germinate. One month warm then one month cold stratification has produced good results. When large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in a cold frame for their first winter, planting them out in late spring after the last expected frosts. Cuttings in late summer or autumn in sandy soil in a cold frame. Difficult, it may be best done in late winter to early spring.
