Edgard Goedleven is het head of the Department of Monuments and Landscapes. He is the author of "The Royal Glasshousses in Laken" and "The Grand Place in Brussels" two succesful books both published by Lannoo

He was the primary initiator and is still co-organizer or the Flanders Open Monuments day, a co-founder of the Flemish Heritage Foundation and the founder of the M&L magazine.

The square was designed by the Leuven architect Claude Fisco. The first, provisional monument on the Martyrs Square was designed by Tilleman Francois Suys, from Bruges. The plans for the construction of the crvpt were by the architect Louis Roelandt, who was born in Nieuwpoort and worked mainly in Ghent. The Martyrs Monument itself is the work of the sculptor Willem Geefs, who came from Borgerhout near Antwerp. Rich illustrated book, hundreds of plates & illustrations, plan, epilogue, bibliography
