The lettering on the keys is translucent, allowing the backlight to shine throughh. The back light is included with this keyboard.

MacBook keyboards are riveted in to the palmrest when manufactured and are not easy to replace. The original rivets have to be removed and the replacement keyboard is usually screwed back in to place instead of being riveted. This should only be attempted by competent professionals.
