The
Shelbourne Hotel is
a historic hotel in Dublin, Ireland, situated in a landmark
building on the north side of St. Stephen’s Green. Currently owned by Kennedy Wilson and
operated by Marriott International, the hotel has 265 rooms in total and
reopened in 2007 after undergoing an eighteen-month refurbishment. It was founded in 1824 by Martin Burke,
a native of Tipperary when he acquired three adjoining townhouses
overlooking Stephen’s Green, Europe’s largest garden square. Burke named his grand new hotel.
The
Shelbourne, after William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne. Within a year of its opening, The Shelbourne
was firmly established as a favorite of visitors and was at the center of Irish
upper class social life. Within twenty-five years of opening, Burke added the
adjoining houses, 30 and 31 St. Stephen’s Green and 12 Kildare Street. This group of houses together with their
gardens and outbuildings, stood on the site of what is still today the Main
Shelbourne Hotel building. At the time
of Martin Burke’s death in 1863, the Shelbourne’s position as Dublin’s
premier hotel’ was unassailable.
I found
an image of the current Shelbourne and it looks the same as the one on
this card that was published by the “Fergus O’Connor & Co. Dublin”. It is not postmarked but by the dress of the two
men in the image, I think that it is a DB c 1910s. It is in good condition with minor wear and a
clean, clear, brightly colored image and reverse
The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.
Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible. Corrections appreciated.
