This is an original woodcut printed in gray paper by the ASARO COLLECTIVE (Assembly of Revolutionary Artists of Oaxaca) from the 2006 Oaxaca teachers’ uprising. For 44 days 60,000 teachers staged a sit-in (plantón), living in tents in the streets and standing up to Governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz and his police. At 4:30 AM on the 28th day they were attacked by riot police with tear gas, bullets and helicopters. By 10:00 AM the next morning they had regained control. Ultimately they gave in in order to be able to vote in the upcoming elections. These images that inundated the city of Oaxaca during the violence of 2006 were also featured in the UCLA exhibition “La Tinta Grita” (The Ink Roars) at the Fowler Museum, UCLA, and the University of Illinois at Chicago Justice Initiative, 2014.
