Flora and fauna abound in this cashmere-blend scarf recalling a large silk panel in
The Met Collection.
Richly embroidered with a profusion of birds, animals, and flowers,
it was created in 17th-century China and made for export to the West.
The motifs, however, are wholly Asian in subject and style: phoenixes, pheasants, peacocks, and peonies appear with a tiger and an elephant alongside horses, deer, goats, and Chinese mythological beasts.
