Title: Celia Once Again

Author: Ethel Brunner

Publisher: Arthur L Humphreys, London

Edition: First Edition, First Printing

Date Printed: 1918

Description: A rare museum-quality item. This is the bibliographer George Locke's copy of the very scarce third "Celia" novel by Ethel Brunner, in which her lightly-fictionalised family and friends, including Sir John Brunner and Sir Alfred Mond, have strange adventures.

A very nice example of the first printing of the first edition. This copy is nicely signed by the author to  the title page: "To my friend Paul - Ethel Brunner - July 17th 1924". Original cloth hardback. 472 pages. 7.5 by 5 inches. The book is in attractive condition with some wear, fading and bumping (see pictures). Paper at front hinge cracked but binding sound and square.

George Locke became interested in Ethel Brunner, and wrote an article about her for "Relapse", in which he identified her as the grandmother of the SF writer John Brunner. Ethel Brunner was murdered by her husband in 1926, the killer then committing suicide. The case received sensational press coverage, and later Mond was alleged to have caused the tragedy.

George Locke relates in his article in "Relapse" magazine: "I found the two books by his (John Brunner's) grandmother...My gawd they're seriously peculiar! The second, Celia's Fantastic Voyage might even be definable as Fantasy or Utopian, but there are 400 pages of turgidity and eccentricity to wade through."

Provenance: This book was part of the collection of the celebrated book seller and collector George Locke.
