Antique 1823 hardcover book, covered in leather by previous owner in the early 1800's.  “The Scholar’s Arithmetic; or, Federal Accountant...by Daniel Adams, M.B.  The Whole in a Form and Method Altogether New, for the Ease of the Master and the Greater Progress of the Scholar”: : Stereotype Edition: Revised and corrected, with Additions: Keene N.H.: Printed by John Prentiss: 1823. Daniel Adams was a physician, textbook author and site legislator born in Townsend, Massachusetts. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1797, married in 1800 and began practicing medicine in the same year. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Boston, working as a teacher and editor. Shortly thereafter, he moved to New Hampshire and practiced medicine. He wrote several textbooks in his lifetime, the first being “The Scholar’s Arithmetic” originally published in 1801. It was a very popular textbook and was re-published and later revised.

Inside the front as well as inside back cover are the names of previous owners dated 1836, 1838 & 1839.    Covers all the basics as well as the variety of moneys and measurements in use at the turn of the 19th Century. Since the book is covered with a homemade leather book cover, it is to be assumed that the original hardcover is in very good condition.  The rest of the book is in acceptable Condition with some soiling and browning to the pages as to be expected for a 199 year old book. No writing on the interior of the book.  224 pages, the book measures approx. 8.5 x 5.25 x 1".  When first published in 1801, this work quickly gained the widest circulation of any arithmetic book to date.  An unusual feature of this work was that space was left blank between the problems for their solution.  In this sense this was a combination textbook and workbook.  Daniel Adams (1773-1864) went on to write a number of other successful arithmetic books.
